Tips for Shooting (or Faking) Great Neon Photos

Flash Effect Neon style example

Neon photography lives or dies on color contrast — the goal is usually to let the colored light do the work rather than fighting it with flash or white balance correction.

Let color casts happen

Auto white balance tries to neutralize colored light, which can make neon signs look washed out. Locking white balance to daylight, or shooting in a raw format and adjusting after, keeps the colors vivid.

Position the subject between light sources

Standing between two differently colored neon sources (say, pink on one side, blue on the other) creates a more dynamic, layered look than one flat color wash.

No neon nearby? Restyle it

If there's no neon lighting available, AI restyling tools can add a convincing neon-lit color grade — colored reflections, glow, and deeper shadow contrast — to an ordinary photo.

Does a phone camera handle neon lighting well?

Reasonably, though phones often try to auto-correct the color cast — switching to a manual or pro mode, if available, usually keeps the neon colors more true to life.
