What Is a Fisheye Lens, and When Should You Use One?
A fisheye lens is an ultra-wide-angle lens that captures an extremely wide field of view — often 180 degrees — at the cost of noticeable curved distortion, especially near the edges of the frame.
Why the distortion happens
To fit such a wide field of view onto a flat sensor, the lens maps straight lines into curves, which bends the horizon and the edges of the frame outward in a distinctive bulging way.
When it works well
Fisheye suits close-up, playful, high-energy shots — party photos, action shots, and portraits where the exaggerated curvature adds a fun, dynamic feeling rather than looking like a mistake.
When to skip it
Formal portraits or anything where accurate proportions matter usually look better without the distortion, since fisheye can noticeably warp faces and bodies near the frame edges.
Do phone cameras have a real fisheye option?
Most don't include a true fisheye lens, but clip-on lens attachments exist, and AI restyling can convincingly recreate the curved, wide-angle look on an already-taken photo.
