Best Camera Settings for Flash Photography
Flash photography settings are more forgiving than people expect — the flash itself does most of the exposure work on the subject, so camera settings mostly control the background and depth of field.
Shutter speed
Stay at or below your camera's flash sync speed, commonly around 1/200s on many cameras. Slower shutter speeds let more ambient light into the background without affecting how the flash lights the subject.
Aperture
A mid-range aperture like f/5.6-f/8 keeps the subject sharp while still letting the flash do its job; very wide apertures can overexpose a close subject even at low flash power.
ISO
Keep ISO low to moderate (100-400) for a clean flash shot — the flash itself, not high ISO, is providing most of the light on the subject.
What if I'm just using a phone camera?
Phone cameras handle most of this automatically, but you can usually still control flash on/off and, on some phones, flash intensity — distance from the subject remains the biggest lever you control directly.
